Comparing supplement plans

Medicare Supplement plans, also called Medigap plans, are a way for beneficiaries to add to their coverage under Original Medicare (Parts A and B). These plans act as secondary insurance, covering some or all of the costs that you’d normally have to pay out-of-pocket.

Although there are around 10 Medigap plans available, the most popular choices are Plans F, G, and N.

Types of Plans

Let’s dive deeper into each part of Medicare and the supplemental coverage available to beneficiaries.
Original Medicare consists of Part A and Part B and is often referred to as Traditional Medicare. This is the starting point for all beneficiaries, as you must enroll in both Parts A and B before selecting any additional coverage.

Medigap Plan A

Medigap Plan A, also known as Medicare Supplement Plan A, is a basic plan that helps cover the 20% of outpatient medical expenses that Traditional Medicare does not cover.

Medigap Plan B

Medigap Plan B provides similar benefits to Plan A but also includes coverage for Original Medicare’s Part A hospital deductible.

Medicare Part C

Medigap Plan C covers nearly all of Original Medicare’s copayment and coinsurance requirements, with the exception of Medicare Part B’s excess charges, which may not be applicable in all states.

Medicare Part D

Medigap Plan D is one of the 10 standardized Medicare Supplement insurance policies designed to cover the gaps in coverage left by Original Medicare.

Medigap Plan K

Medigap Plan K covers Original Medicare’s hospital deductible and 50% of coinsurance and copayment expenses, providing a more affordable option for supplemental coverage.

Medigap Part L

Medigap Plan L covers a percentage of your out-of-pocket expenses left by Original Medicare and includes an annual out-of-pocket maximum limit of $3,470 (in 2023).

Medigap Plan M

Medigap Plan M offers similar benefits to other supplement plans but with a lower premium, requiring you to pay part of your Original Medicare deductibles.

High Deductible Plan G

Medigap High Deductible Plan G is a great option for those seeking the network flexibility of Medigap with a lower monthly premium than Plans F, G, or N.
